2. Getting a French License (for New Drivers)
Steps:
-
Register at a driving school (or as a private candidate).
-
Pass the theory test (“Code de la route“).
-
Take driving lessons (minimum of 20 hours).
-
Pass the practical driving test.
-
Receive a probationary license for 3 years (or 2 years with supervised learning).
During probation, you have:
-
A reduced point allowance (6 points instead of 12).
-
Speed limitations.
-
A special “A” sticker on your car.
3. Points System
-
French licenses use a 12-point system.
-
New drivers start with 6 points.
-
Points are lost for infractions (e.g., speeding, phone use).
-
Can regain points by staying violation-free or attending recovery courses.
4. Exchanging a Foreign License
You may be able to exchange your license for a French one, depending on your country of origin:
-
EU/EEA citizens: No need to exchange unless there’s an infraction.
-
Non-EU citizens: Must exchange within 1 year of becoming a French resident if your license is from a country with a reciprocal agreement.
